The clinic is a fast-paced environment where the care of the patients is the priority, and at the end of the day we’ve made a difference in so many lives - feline and human caregiver.

Whether in the clinic providing medical care, in the office, or at a fundraiser, our small team helps more than 8,000 cats each year.

Current Positions Available:


FT + Relief Certified Veterinary Technicians

Full-time: 3 to 4 10-hour shifts per week, with benefits
Relief:  4-hour shifts (available Tuesday through Friday) 


We’re looking for CVTs who are passionate about our spay/neuter program, have critical thinking skills, good time management, and have experience with anesthesia induction and monitoring. The ideal candidate will have HQHVSN experience and a passion for spay/neuter. If that’s you, we hope to hear from you soon!

+ POSITION DESCRIPTION

Main Responsibilities:

  • Gain complete knowledge of FCCO clinic protocols and procedures
  • Surgical prep
  • Induce anesthesia
  • Administer vaccines and other SQ, IM and IV injections
  • Surgical assisting, setting up cats for surgery, assisting the surgeon
  • Respond to emergency situations such as cardiac and respiratory arrest
  • Assist with tame cat exams
  • Recover patients, extubate, and monitor recovery
  • Move cats between traps, carriers and cage banks
  • Assist with patient check-in as needed
  • Instrument prep, including washing, wrapping and autoclaving instruments
  • Equipment maintenance, including instruments, clippers, anesthesia equipment, and autoclave
  • Cleaning duties as needed
  • Learn the office procedures to include scheduling, how to use a humane trap and trapping instructions, how to check in/out a trap
  • Prep cats for check out
  • Give caregivers post op instructions and check out cats

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary Technician certified in Oregon
  • 2+ years of clinical experience
  • Experience working in a high-volume spay/neuter clinic preferred
  • Team player with great follow-through
  • Support the mission of the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon
  • Current Oregon driver’s license and good driving record
  • Able to lift 40lbs and work a physical 10-hour day on your feet
  • Patience, tolerance and an ability to work with a wide range of people

Work Environment:
FCCO spay/neuter clinics are fast-paced, high-quality, high-volume clinics. You will work with one or two staff CVTs as well as technical and lay volunteers. You may be exposed to animal waste, parasites, cleaning products, and other things that come with working with animals.

FCCO is a vegetarian organization and all meals eaten inside the facility must be vegetarian.

Time Commitment:
Full-time CVTs work a 10-hour shift 3 or 4 days per week (generally Tuesday through Friday, with an occasional Saturday). Relief work is a 4-hour shift, available Tuesdays through Fridays.

Pay Rate:
$28-$32, depending on experience

Spay/Neuter Veterinarian

Contract surgeons provide surgical and medical services for cats admitted to an FCCO spay/neuter clinic.

+ VETERINARIAN POSITION DESCRIPTION

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current Oregon state veterinary license in good standing.
  • Prefer a veterinarian who has worked at a HVHQSN clinic or has been to a training at the ASPCA spay/neuter training center in Asheville, NC.
  • Able to perform a feline ovariohysterectomy in approximately 10 minutes or less and a feline castration in under 3 minutes following FCCO surgical protocols. If you are not at this time, we will provide training and surgical experience with an expectation to achieve this within 6 months of your hire date.
  • Surgical shifts are about four hours long with an average of 60 surgeries being performed during this timeframe (depending in part if one or two surgeons are working).
  • Willing and able to follow existing FCCO protocols and procedures. If you want to change a protocol submit a written proposal to the Medical Director, who will make the final decision about changing or adding a medical protocol. If you have any questions about surgical or medical protocols, please ask the Medical Director.
  • The ability to maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  • Must display a positive attitude.

Major Duties:

  • Perform spay and neuter surgeries in an efficient, competent manner following FCCO surgical protocols.
  • Perform additional surgeries as outlined in the FCCO Surgical Protocols. These surgeries include but are not limited to: cryptorchid, enucleation, tail amputation, hernia repair umbilical and traumatic.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic health exams on qualifying cats/kittens.
  • Follow up with caregivers/owners of patients with complications or euthanasia.
  • Assist with maintaining patient records (surgical records and exam forms for pets, fosters and Kitten Caboose kittens).
  • Assist with post-surgical inquiries from caregivers as needed.
  • Support the mission of FCCO, the policies and procedures.
  • Oversee volunteer veterinarians to ensure they are following FCCO protocols.
  • Support FCCO staff and volunteers.

Measures of Success:

  • All the surgeries admitted for the day are finished in a timely manner.
  • The rate of surgical complications is less than 1% of the surgeries you perform.
  • You are following all FCCO policies, procedures, and core values.
  • All cats are cared for in a respectful and compassionate manner.
  • The staff is happy and positive.
  • You are able to perform duties in a calm and respectful manner.

Work Environment:
All work will be performed at the FCCO surgery clinic in Portland. You will be working with both staff and volunteers (lay and technical) in both environments. There may be another volunteer or contract veterinarian working with you depending on the number of surgeries planned for the day. The average number of spays/neuters performed in the clinic each day is 60 surgeries. We strive for this number but over-schedule for this number to show up, allowing for the possibility of a larger clinic on some days if all the cats show up for their appointments.

Time Commitment:
This contract position is for approximately 4 hours a day, depending on the surgery schedule.
